Grand Union celebrates starting on site at Flitton

Local social housing provider, Grand Union Housing Group (GUHG), has commemorated the start on site of a new housing development in Flitton, Mid Bedfordshire. GUHG invited the partners who had helped make the forthcoming scheme possible to a ‘sod cutting’ ceremony at the site on Friday 20 March 2009.

The scheme, which will be constructed by Relmfield Builders Ltd for GUHG’s subsidiary, Aragon Housing Association, will consist of six houses and one bungalow. The development will be built on a rural exception site, providing affordable housing for local housing needs. Four of these homes will be for people to rent and three to purchase under the government’s New Build HomeBuy (part-buy / part-rent) scheme.

GUHG worked in partnership with Flitton and Greenfield Parish Council, Mid Bedfordshire District Council and Bedfordshire County Council to secure the land and gain planning permission.

Speaking at the sod cutting, Aileen Evans, Aragon’s Managing Director, expressed her gratitude:

“Exception sites like these take a lot of work from a lot of people. Thank you to Flitton and Greenfield Parish Members for their tenacity, continued support of the scheme and understanding over the length of time it has taken to come to fruition.  To Bedfordshire County Council, who have enabled us to purchase the land, and to Mid Beds District Council (MBDC) for working with Aragon to ensure that local people get the opportunity to live in what I am sure will be a lovely scheme.”

MBDC’s Councillor Anita Lewis added:

“I am very pleased that this day has come as we have been waiting for it for many years. I am sure that Aragon will provide local homes for local people and I wish the scheme every success.”
